Melbourne Institute researcher Dr Hielke Buddelmeyer has traced the monthly spending on the pokies across 62 local government areas in Victoria between July 2004 and June 2012. The study has found that there was an extraordinary spike in spending on poker machines after the first stimulus cheques were sent out in December 2008 and again in May and June 2009 when the second cheques were sent out. His research is featured in The Australian today.
