Activate Your Abundance by Kim Caldwell - Self Help Daily

Activate Your Abundance Remembering Your Power to Create What You Want - Kim Caldwell - Paperback

?Abundance is not something we acquire. It is something we tune into.? ? Wayne Dyer

Whenever I?m in the middle of a great book, I always think of one of my favorite quotes, ?Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.?? I?m honestly not sure who originally said it, but I?m certain I?d love to sit down with them for an afternoon, drinking coffee and talking books.? Or tea, if they?re British. Tea? coffee? I go either way.

I recently told you about a great book by Kim Caldwell, How Green Smoothies Saved My Life (click the link for the review, if you missed it).? I just finished another book by Kim called Activate Your Abundance: Remembering Your Power to Create What You Want.

?Listen for the magic word of motivation and you will hear it. Then the sky is the limit.? - Norman Vincent Peale

I talk on a regular basis to a lot of authors and publishers about books and book reviews. One asked me a few years ago how I approached a book review. I told her that I let the book, itself, lead the way?. then I try very hard not to get IN the way.

Some books need to be guided along in a review ? I?ll feel the need to explain certain concepts because they aren?t truly clear until you, yourself, have read the book.

However, with Activate Your Abundance, no guided tour is necessary.? I could honestly say something like, ?This is the book that can serve as a spark plug to your self confidence and fuel to your success (in all the ways you define success).? Activate Your Abundance will act as a broom to sweep away the cobwebs of negativity in the corners of your mind and life.? If you want to release yesterday, embrace today, and improve tomorrow, make this the next book you read.?

That, and that alone, could be the review because it truly sums it up.? However, it doesn?t seem fair to sum up such a wonderful and potentially life-changing book with one paragraph.

Besides, we all know I am not a gal of few words.

From the Introduction of Activate Your Abundance:

One of the most important messages this book offers is how negative emotions become trapped in our body, creating disease and problems in our lives. Many of us have lived with these problems for years, unaware of the root cause. These include weight, relationship, health, and financial problems.? You are probably thinking, ?If I need to lose weight, how will clearing negative thoughts help??? Let me assure you that releasing these heavy emotions will lighten our load both mentally and physically.? I have found some of the best techniques available to heal and clear these negative emotions. I present them here to you with the knowing that they will make wonderful shifts in your consciousness if practiced consistently with an open mind.? The dividends for releasing these stuck negative emotions are endless. You will discover yourself in a new way as all your best qualities start to emerge. ? Kim Caldwell

In Activate Your Abundance, you will experience a 44-Day program designed to help you get in touch with YOU and the world around you. Not the you that you think you should be, and not the world you think you should have.? The program strips away all the extras, along with all the negative cobwebs.? Some that you never even knew were hanging around!

?Always leave enough time in your life to do something that makes you happy, satisfied, even joyous.? That has more of an effect on economic well-being than any other factor.? ? Paul Hawken

One of the things I love most about this very positive, up-lifting, and give-me-the-toothbrush-while-I-take-on-the-hounds-of-hell book is the fact that it?s all about ATTRACTING great things to you.?? It?s about realizing that you are worthy of everything you dream of.? You are not chained by past mistakes or heartaches. No one and nothing is holding you back or in place.

I?ll confess, I did not take 44 days and treat this book as a day by day program.? I was only in ?Day Two? when I realized that the ?meat? in this book was too good to put the fork down!? I kept finding myself saying things like, ?Oh, that?s good? Amen to that!? and ?Where?s my pen, I have to write that down.?

Something else I told an author once was the fact that the hardest thing about writing book reviews is giving enough information without giving too much away.? Books aren?t just paper and bright covers. Books are experiences and the best experiences in life are those you don?t see coming.? To this book lover, giving too much away is like opening a Christmas present early, then wrapping it back up.? It takes the joy out of the whole thing.

Each ?Day? is like a powerful devotion and gives you something to think about and work on. Each one is designed to chip away at negative forces in you and in your life. Some you would never have thought of on your own ? I guarantee it.

How effective can it be to get rid of negativity?? Think of a cloudy, over-cast day.? When the dark clouds move out of the way, the sunshine feels brighter and more beautiful than ever, doesn?t it?! Think of negativity as dark clouds.? Activate Your Abundance can help clear the clouds out of your sky and leave you with brightness and beauty.

A final word about the sneaky effects of negativity:? Most people don?t realize they even have a problem with negative thoughts.? They think there?s some big mystery that explains why they aren?t happy, satisfied, or living up to their potential. They may blame other people, their circumstances, and even God.? They look everywhere except the place they should look!

The following illustration, I think, brings it all home.

I recently read about a woman?s diagnosis with Thyroid Disease. It made me think back to when my own thyroid went haywire.? I had no idea, whatsoever, what my problem was. I just knew I had a big one.?? My hands were shaky and always sweaty.? Before holding one of my little girls? hands, I?d always have to dry my hand off on something first.? I could just walk across the room and my pulse would jump up to 106 beats a minute. It felt like it was beating right out of my chest.

One night I was reading a book (knowing me, it was an Agatha Christie novel? I ALWAYS have one going) across from my husband in our den. I shook my head and put the book down.? He asked what was wrong and I told him the words weren?t words all of a sudden, they were just a bunch of letters that didn?t make any sense.? He, of course, looked alarmed.? I picked the book back up and they were words again.

I went to the doctor the next day.

This particular doctor didn?t catch my problem. He treated my asthma with his favorite medicines and told me not to read when I was overly tired.? I said, ?Okay? out loud and added, ?moron? under my breath.

The weird symptoms continued to pile up.? My weight dropped, I was thirsty 24-7, my brain was foggy, and my heart continued to race. My poor mom nearly worried herself silly and the only words my husband seemed capable of saying at the time was, ?Call another doctor.?

I was a young mother of three very young and active little girls. I kept thinking, ?I?m just extremely tired.? My dad was going through a nightmare with his own health, and I rationed away my problems as stress on top of exhaustion.

One day, my husband, our daughters, and I were in a nearby city around lunch time.? It was raining and he had to run into a store. I was (as always) SO thirsty.? I rolled my window down, wiped rain water off of the rear view mirror and put the water into my mouth? like four times in a row. The thought now makes me kind of sick, but I felt like I was about to die of thirst!

I went to another doctor the next day.

I think my mom suspected diabetes and I?m pretty sure my husband thought I had some sort of crazy, yet to be named disease with a grim outlook.? As for me, I didn?t know what it was but felt certain it was bad.

Even my doctor seemed overly concerned!

Turns out I had a ridiculously overactive thyroid that needed to be destroyed.? The hospital said they?d never seen one so out of whack ? I took pride in that.? The hyperactive, crazy thyroid was dealt a final blow and I began taking a simple little pill every morning.? No biggy.

?The thing is, the solution and the cause were so simple! I kept getting worse because, honestly, I think I was kind of scared of what doctors would find because I felt SO bad.? Turns out the answer was quick, painless, and? in every way possible? gave me my life back.

I?m sure you see where I?m headed with this. Negativity is like an undiagnosed disease.? It?s victim will think the problem is something else.? Heck, they may be so scared that it?s something HUGE that they try to cover it up.? They know the cobwebs are on the window, but they throw curtains up over it.? Personally, I think a lot of people are scared that their problem is anxiety or depression.? Like me with my haywire thyroid, they?re certain the problem is bigger than it actually is.

You can deal negativity a fatal blow!? Your cure could be just a book away and the answer is quick, painless, and? in every way possible, will give you your life back.

Texas lawmaker wants hearing over vet deaths

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) ? A Texas congressman is calling for hearings in response to a newspaper report that an alarming number of Texas veterans of the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan have died of prescription drug overdoses.

U.S. Rep. Bill Flores, a Bryan Republican on the U.S. House Committee on Veterans Affairs, says the overdose issue "bothers me a lot." Flores tells the Austin American-Statesman that he will ask for a hearing to get the Veterans Administration's response to the overdoses and the latest research on post-traumatic stress disorder.

The Statesman reported last month that a newspaper investigation found the number of suicides among Texas veterans is nearly matched by the number of those dying from prescription drug overdoses.

There is also concern over how well the VA is tracking deaths among veterans.

Optometrist warns about wearing tinted contact lenses on Halloween

ScienceDaily (Oct. 22, 2012) ? Decorative tinted contact lenses will be popular accessories this Halloween, but a Loyola University Medical Center optometrist is warning that improper use without a prescription could cause severe eye damage.

"Contact lenses should never be worn without a prescription from a licensed optometrist or ophthalmologist," said Peter Russo, OD, director of the Contact Lens Program at Loyola University Medical Center. "In fact, it is against the law to sell decorative contact lenses without a prescription."

Non-prescription Halloween contacts come in such colors as white zombie, red vampire and "sexy sapphire." They are sold illegally in beauty shops, costume stores and over the internet.

Many buyers are teenagers and young adults. When purchased without a prescription, these lenses may not be fitted properly, and buyers usually do not receive proper instruction on how to care for and wear contacts. Users might, for example, use the wrong solution, share with a friend, wear improperly, fail to disinfect or use tap water rather than contact lens solution, Russo said.

Improper use can cause inflammation and infections, making eyes red and painful. Even when these complications are treated, there's still a risk that scar tissue could permanently impair vision and require a corneal transplant, Russo said.

"Even when worn for a relatively short period of time, such as during a Halloween party, decorative contact lenses can damage eyes if not used properly," Russo said. "They may seem like a lot of fun, but they're not worth the risk. Never wear a contact lens, whether for vision correction or for decoration, without a prescription."

FDA Approves Fycompa to Treat Seizures in Those 12 Years and ...

Silver Spring, Maryland--(ENEWSPF)--October 22, 2012. ?The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today approved Fycompa (perampanel) tablets to treat partial onset seizures in patients with epilepsy ages 12 years and older.

Partial seizures are the most common type of seizure seen in people with epilepsy. Epilepsy is a brain disorder in which there is abnormal or excessive activity of nerve cells in the brain. Partial seizures affect only a limited or localized area of the brain, but can spread to other parts of the brain. Seizures cause a wide range of symptoms, including repetitive limb movements (spasms), unusual behavior, and generalized convulsions with loss of consciousness.??

?Some people with epilepsy do not achieve satisfactory seizure control from treatments they are currently using,? said Russell Katz, M.D., director of the Division of Neurology Products in the FDA?s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. ?It is important to have a variety of treatment options available for patients with epilepsy.?

Results from three clinical trials showed improvement in seizure control in patients taking Fycompa compared with those taking an inactive pill (placebo).?

The most common adverse reactions reported by patients receiving Fycompa in clinical trials include: dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, irritability, falls, upper respiratory tract infection, weight increase, vertigo, loss of muscle coordination (ataxia), gait disturbance, balance disorder, anxiety, blurred vision, stuttering (dysarthria), weakness (asthenia), aggression, and excessive sleep (hypersomnia).

Fycompa?s label has a boxed warning to alert prescribers and patients about the risk of serious neuropsychiatric events, including irritability, aggression, anger, anxiety, paranoia, euphoric mood, agitation, and mental status changes. Some of these events were reported as serious and life-threatening. Violent thoughts or threatening behavior was also observed in a few patients. Patients and caregivers should alert a health care professional immediately if changes in mood or behavior that are not typical for the patient are observed. Health care professionals should closely monitor patients during the titration period when higher doses are used.

Fycompa will be dispensed with a patient Medication Guide that provides important instructions on its use and drug safety information.

Fycompa is manufactured by Eisai Inc. of Woodcliff Lake, N.J.?

Benefits of an Online Gaming Casino Directory - Online Casino Edition

The advent of the internet has brought the whole world into the palm of your hands. You can stay in touch with anyone in the world nowadays; you can even enjoy gambling on your couch in your pajamas if you so desire. Having access to an online casino directory can help you find the information you are seeking. Because there are so many online casinos these days, it is helpful to have a directory so that you can find the types of games you are seeking, whether it is table games or specific types of slot machines. Some websites that are dedicated to the many players across the world offer this information in several different languages so that players in different countries can also benefit from the information provided.

When selecting a specific directory, you want to find one that will provide reliable information in regards to the many online casinos and the varieties of games the offer. There should be a safe and easy portal from which you can register to view the directory. Because people want to experience a fun and safe gambling experience, the directory you choose should only provide those casinos that have great consumer ratings. It should also be based on an index that provides the appropriate links to the sites you wish to visit.

This directory should direct you to the casinos that offer the best in customer service. It really is a nightmare to play in a casino where the customer is not number one. The directory should give honest and helpful advice to its readers. The sole aim of a directory is to provide a helpful service, not to make money. If the directory provides great tips and advice as to the many casinos available, this will satisfy the customer and keep him or her coming back. The directory should have ratings for each individual casino and each of the games that it has to offer. It should also let you know the safety of the casino?s payment methods. Visitors to site directories appreciate this help in finding the right casino online.

A good directory will also provide links to many different casinos so that newbies can try a few before they make their decision. Also, the newbie should look for casinos with free play or downloadable games so that he or she can practice before actually gambling with real money. The individual can then select games to play that he or she feels would be most beneficial and give better odds. Being successful at Blackjack or different forms of Poker doesn?t always rely on luck, as in these games strategy is a must. By practicing, the newcomer will be able to improve upon his or her skills and build the confidence needed to try other games.

The bottom line is that a good online gaming directory will show more than just a list of casinos. Casino industry news, game reviews, styles of gambling, and a blog should be included to that newbies can garner education from the experiences of others.

Antibiotics not effective for cough due to 'common cold' in children

American College of Chest Physicians

New research suggests that antibiotics are not effective in treating cough due to the common cold in children. The study, presented at CHEST 2012, the annual meeting of the American College of Chest Physicians, found that when children with acute cough were treated with either antitussive medication or antibiotics, antibiotics alone showed a lower percentage of cough resolution.

"In our experience, antibiotics are often prescribed by the general practitioner to treat cough in children, many times to pacify parents," said lead study author Francesco de Blasio, MD, FCCP, Clinic Center Private Hospital, Naples, Italy. "However, antibiotics show very little effectiveness at treating cough due to your average head cold."

To understand how antibiotics were being used in a clinical pediatric setting, Dr. de Blasio and colleagues from the University of Bologna and Domp SPA in Italy observed the treatment and outcomes of 305 children who required pediatric consultation due to acute cough from the common cold. Of the children, 89 received antibiotics only, while 38 received a combination of antibiotics and antitussives; central (codeine and cloperastine) in 16 cases, and peripheral (levodropropizine) in 22 children. Forty-four and 79 children received only central or peripheral antitussives, respectively, without antibiotics; 55 children did not receive medication.

Observational results showed no difference in percentage of cough resolution between children treated with antitussive alone vs children receiving a combination of antibiotics and antitussives. On the contrary, children treated with antibiotics only had a lower percentage of cough resolution than children treated with antitussive only. Furthermore, the use of the peripheral antitussive levodropropizine demonstrated a significant beneficial effect in terms of cough resolution compared with centrally acting antitussive drugs (47% vs28%).

"Few drugs are effective as cough suppressants, and antibiotics are no more effective in relieving cough than the use of no medication," he added. "However, peripheral antitussives, such as levodropropizine, appear to be the best option at relieving cough."

Dr. de Blasio's results support the American College of Chest Physicians evidence-based guidelines for the diagnosis and management of cough, published in the journal CHEST in 2006, which recommend the use of peripheral antitussives for certain types of cough. Although antibiotics may not be an effective therapy for cough, they can be useful in treating underlying infections that may produce cough, adds Dr. de Blasio. But he warns that antibiotics should not be overused. "Using antibiotics as a treatment for cough without suspected infection is unnecessary and can be harmful," explained Dr. de Blasio. "Repeated use of antibiotics, especially when they are ineffective, can lead to adverse allergic reactions or a resistance to the medications."

"As parents, it is difficult to watch our children suffering from a terrible cough, but turning to antibiotics is not always the answer," said ACCP President-Elect Darcy D. Marciniuk, MD, FCCP. "Depending on the underlying cause of the cough, a health-care professional can recommend the best treatment options for a child, which, in some cases, may be no treatment."

New glow for electron microscopy: Protein-labeling technique allows high-resolution visualization of molecules inside cells

ScienceDaily (Oct. 22, 2012) ? The glowing green molecule known as green fluorescent protein (GFP) has revolutionized molecular biology. When GFP is attached to a particular protein inside a cell, scientists can easily identify and locate it using fluorescence microscopy. However, GFP can't be used with electron microscopy, which offers much higher resolution than fluorescence microscopy.

Chemists from MIT have now designed a GFP equivalent for electron microscopy -- a tag that allows scientists to label and visualize proteins with unprecedented clarity.

"With things that may appear only a few pixels across by fluorescence microscopy -- for example, a mitochondrion -- you can't make out any of the internal features. But with electron microscopy it's very easy to discern the intricate internal structures," says Jeff Martell, a graduate student in chemistry at MIT and lead author of a paper describing the new tag in the Oct. 21 online edition of Nature Biotechnology.

The new tag could help scientists pinpoint the locations of many cell proteins, providing new insight into those proteins' functions, according to the researchers.

Improving on nature

Dubbed APEX, the new tag is similar to naturally occurring proteins that have been tried as imaging labels for electron microscopy. Horseradish peroxidase (HRP) is one commonly used tag, but it works only in a few compartments of a cell. Other recently developed tags work throughout a cell but are technically challenging to use because they require light to be shined on the sample and oxygen to be bubbled through it.

To improve on these methods, the researchers started with a protein similar to HRP, called ascorbate peroxidase (APX). APX is more versatile than HRP because it can function within a cell's cytosol, in the main cavity of a cell.

Both HRP and APX belong to a class of enzymes called peroxidases, which remove an electron and a proton from other molecules in a process known as oxidation. Every peroxidase has different targets, and one of HRP's main targets is a molecule called DAB, which when oxidized can be visualized with electron microscopy. The researchers genetically engineered APX so that it would also target DAB.

To use this new APEX tag (for "engineered APX"), the researchers deliver, into a living cell, a small ring of DNA containing the APEX gene joined to the gene for the protein they plan to image. The cell then produces the target protein, bound to the APEX protein.

Next, the researchers need to deliver DAB, which is not normally found in cells. This delivery takes place during the process of "fixing," or stabilizing cells, which must be done before they can be imaged with electron microscopy.

When the APEX protein oxidizes DAB, it generates radicals that rapidly clump together into a tarlike polymer. That polymer can be detected through electron microscopy, allowing the researchers to pinpoint the location of the target protein.

Biological question resolved

To demonstrate the usefulness of their new tag, the researchers set out to resolve an open question regarding the location of a calcium channel protein discovered last year. Two research groups identified the protein and reported that it is located within mitochondria, but they had conflicting theories as to its precise location and orientation. Using the new imaging technique, the MIT-led team labeled the protein and determined that it is embedded in the inner mitochondrial membrane and faces into the innermost part of mitochondria, the mitochondrial matrix.

The team also showed that the new tag can label proteins throughout the cell -- not only within mitochondria but also in the nucleus, the endoplasmic reticulum and the cytosol.

Martell and Alice Ting, the Ellen Swallow Richards Associate Professor of Chemistry at MIT and senior author of the Nature Biotechnology paper, invented the new technology. Other authors who helped to test the tag and explore biological applications are Mark Ellisman, Thomas Deerinck and Gina Sosinsky of the University of California at San Diego, Yasemin Sancak and Vamsi Mootha of Harvard Medical School, and Thomas Poulos of the University of California at Irvine.

In current studies, the researchers are working on filling entire cells, such as neurons, with their imaging agent. This allows certain neurons in an electron microscope image to stand out, making it easier to trace the connections they make with other neurons. For that project, the MIT researchers are collaborating with Joshua Sanes, a professor of molecular and cellular biology at Harvard University, who says he believes the new labeling technology will be very useful.

"We want to find the exact connections that these cells are making, and APEX is a good way to label cells for electron microscopy. We can label specific types of cells and figure out how they fit into the neural circuitry," Sanes says.

Ting and Martell have filed for a patent on their imaging technology and are now working on making the APEX molecule more stable and better able to bind heme (an iron atom embedded in an organic compound), which is necessary for it to function properly.

The research was funded by the National Institutes of Health.

Bankruptcy Tips And Advice From The Experts | Siben & Siben Long ...

TIP! If you are facing a looming tax debt, don?t think that bankruptcy can be your savior. People often times try to use bankruptcy as a way to avoid paying taxes, one trick people try is to use credit cards to pay taxes and then claim bankruptcy.

Debt is one of the scariest things to live with. One day you?re looking at a little mole hill; the next day you?re staring down a mountain. It doesn?t take long at all before the debt becomes too much to handle. Getting out of debt is not easy, especially if you do not have a steady job. You should read ahead for great tips on how to face and handle a bankruptcy, when your debt is insurmountable.

TIP! Before filing for bankruptcy, be sure to choose the kind of bankruptcy that is best for your personal financial situation. A lot of people do not realize that there is more than one form of bankruptcy.

Don?t try to hide anything if you are filing for bankruptcy, as this will hurt you in the long run. Regardless of the agency you file with, ensure that you tell them all they should know about your current financial situation, regardless of how good or bad it is. You are in this situation, now help them to give you the best assistance possible to deal with it. You do that by giving full disclosure and holding nothing back.

TIP! If keeping your vehicle is of great concern, ask your lawyer if you can secure a payment modification. A lot of the time, your payments may be lowered due to Chapter 7 bankruptcy.

Don?t believe the myth that declaring bankruptcy means you lose everything you own. You will be able to keep your personal property. This includes items, such as jewelry, clothes, household furnishings, electronics, etc. Exactly what assets you can hang onto will depend on the applicable laws in your state, your filing status, and your personal finances.

TIP! Do your research ahead of time to find out if you permitted to get a Homestead Exemption with Chapter 7. If you don?t, the possibility may exist for you with Chapter 13.

If your paycheck is larger than your debts, avoid filing for bankruptcy. Though bankruptcy may appear to be a good way to escape your debts, it does affect your credit negatively for a fairly long time.

TIP! If you are filing for bankruptcy, be sure you are being honest, no matter how dire your situation is. It can be catastrophic to make up things about your assets and debts.

Some lawyers offer a phone number that you can give creditors when they call you about your delinquent account. All you have to do is give the number for the attorney?s office, which allows them to confirm the validity of your bankruptcy. By doing this, you can stop these calls from occurring again.

TIP! Not all of your debts can be eliminated by filing for bankruptcy. Creditors are paid a portion of the amount you owe under a chapter 13 restructuring.

If you are in a position where you are unable to pay your debts, bankruptcy may be the only option for you. If this describes your situation, it makes sense to become familiar with relevant laws. Laws differ from one state to the other. Some states protect your home, and others do not. Become acquainted with local bankruptcy laws before filing.

TIP! There is nothing to be embarrassed about when it comes to filing for bankruptcy. Often, people become depressed because of their failures in finances.

If you are in a situation that may result in bankruptcy, you will probably have a lot of contact with creditors. Always get written confirmation of agreements you reach with yours creditors so that you have reliable records. Any flexibility with creditors can affect the process of bankruptcy, as long as it is recorded.

TIP! Always make sure your documents are accurate. Even if you have a lawyer to do that work for you, you are the one who has to make sure your information is correct.

In order to protect your credit history, make sure that bankruptcy filing is your absolute final choice. It is common for creditors express a willingness to settle debts for less than is owed, or create payment plans for debtors. Not only will you end up saving money, but your credit rating won?t take such a hard knock. Before filing, think about a loan for debt consolidation.

TIP! You should obtain a copy of your credit report from all three reporting agencies soon after you declare bankruptcy. Remember that this report would be representing your closed credit accounts and your discharged debts.

When you are filing for bankruptcy, make sure you list all of the financial information you may have. If you don?t do this, your file could be delayed or dismissed. Even if it?s a small sum, make sure it is listed. Include all jobs, assets and loans.

TIP! Be certain that you can differentiate between Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 bankruptcy. Chapter 7 involves the elimination of all of your debt.

There are certain life events that you have no control over. In this article, you were presented with some tips on regaining control of your money and debt. Use the advice that you have been given to make some changes in your life.

We speak to Siraj Datoo fromThe Students Journals | Brit Writers ...

We speak to Siraj Datoo, who?s organising a conference for students who are looking to break into journalism (and is also editor-in-chief of The Student Journals).

?

Who is Siraj, and tell us more about your background?

Ha, well that?s a complicated question to answer. Although I was born in New York, and also lived in Dar es Salaam for two years when I was very young, I was brought up in London and have spent most of my life there (very much in contrast with my ancestors who lived in India). I turned 22 a couple of weeks ago and after spending seven months in Le Mans (a city in the north-west of France) teaching as a language assistant, I?m now back to finish my final year of French with International Studies at the University of Warwick. The thing I miss most about France? The bread!

I?m also the founder and editor-in-chief of The Student Journals, an award-winning online magazine for students around the world.

?

?

What inspired you to set up The Student Journals?

?

The thing I love about the Warwick is that students have got a huge number of opportunities available to them ? there are so many societies to get involved in and events to help organise. My grounding, and the way I have been brought up has been very much about getting involved with, and giving back to, the community ? and so with so much happening, I threw myself into a number of societies, such as TEDxWarwick, One World Week and Warwick Entrepreneurs.

?

I have also always been interested in writing and although I have also written about various countries I have visited, I collate all my articles on my blog, which is mostly inundated with opinion articles about issues such as discrimination, human rights and international politics (France appears to pop up quite often). At the end of my first year, however, I thought about how many students there must be like me, who write but whose blog is mostly read only by their friends. That same night, I did some market research to find out whether anything existed (it didn?t, by the way), and called some friends up to get opinions. As soon as I got off the phone with Ali Gokal, who agreed to take on the role of Deputy Editor, I started drawing up some designs. A couple of months of web development later (for which I still owe Sadiq Datoo a huge amount of gratitude), and TheStudentJournals.com was born ? we moved to studentjournals.co.uk a few months later.

?

?

What exactly is The Student Journals?

?

TSJ is an online magazine that gives students around the world a platform to engage in political discussion and debate issues that matter to them, as well as interview personalities they would be interested in. We?ve had articles ranging from Sudanese independence to a number about the US elections (one of our big focus points at the moment) and arguably our biggest interviews have been with Kate Allen (Director, Amnesty International UK), football journalist Iain Macintosh, Economist?s editorial cartoonist Kal and world-famous foreign correspondent Robert Fisk. There are also sections for Education, Blogs, Culture, Features, and Lifestyle, and our culture section is performing outstandingly recently, with fresh reviews of films, theatre performances, music, and books.

?

?

Tell us about some of the challenges you?ve faced when setting this up?

?

Time! When the idea of TSJ came to me, I seem to have forgotten that I had a degree to do as well! Over time though, things got a little easier and I figured out how to manage time a little more effectively around my studies and working on the online magazine.

?

I suppose that money does unfortunately play a role having too. From to pay monthly fees for hosting, domains, running such a site doesn?t come cheap. I?ve been determined, however, to keep TSJ stick to its core and I think that I?ve managed to minimise costs while running an organisation that runs effectively. Getting advertising on the site as well as sponsorship is certainly something we hope for though as we look to expand.

?

When talking about challenges, I suppose it?s pretty important to talk about support we?ve received as well. As well as the core team, who do an outstanding job, our writers keep writing great content and to them I will always remain grateful. I can only hope that they?ve benefited from writing for us and we?re looking to show some of our appreciation during the TSJ Writers Awards ceremony next Saturday, at our ?breaking into journalism? conference.

?

?

What opportunities are there for people to get involved with The Student Journals?

?

There really are a huge number of opportunities available at TSJ. We have vacancies for a web editor, deputy editors, editorial assistants, live bloggers, photographers, broadcast journalists (whether it be TV or radio), and even positions in marketing and on the business team. We?re also always happy to have students around the world writing for us, and we?ve published articles from students based in the UK (of course), Canada, USA, Jordan, France and even South Africa. Any student can submit an article to the site, allowing their voice to be heard.

?

We?re also always looking to partner with organisations that are doing something different. In our first year, we partnered with TEDxWarwick and live blogged the event and interviewed some of the speakers. Since then, we?ve partnered with a number of organisations, and we hope to improve the way we portray digital media through this too, to create a more dynamic experience for writers.

?

?

How important are organisations such as Brit Writers?

?

How often do unpublished writers get the chance to be recognised for their work and have it showcased? The chances and opportunities are so rare that organisations such as the Brit Writers become treasured. Britain should be proud to have such an Awards Ceremony.

?

?

What?s this about a ?breaking into journalism? conference?

?

For the past few months, I?ve been working on a conference to bring decorated journalists together to help ?wannabe hacks? break into the industry. So next Saturday, the 27th October, when TSJ will celebrate its second year since launch, there will be some fantastic great speakers, including Carla Buzasi, editor-in-chief of Huffington Post UK, Jonathan Hewett, the director of Newspaper Journalism MA and Interactive Journalism MA at City Journalism School, as well as journalists from the Guardian, Telegraph, New Statesman, Channel 4 & many more speakers.

?

Attendees will be able to tailor the event according to their own interests through workshops, and a ?networking lunch?, where students can talk to the journalists present is definitely one that we?re sure will prove very useful and beneficial for any aspiring journalists.

?

Thanks to some generous sponsorship from City Journalism School, Warwick Knowledge Centre and the University of Warwick, we have been able to reduce ticket prices to only ?6. Entry includes a free copy of the Economist, New Statesman, and Prospect magazine (if you?re early enough for the latter), as well as coffee/tea/snacks and cake. We have attendees coming from across the UK (from Norwich and London to York, Nottingham and Edinburgh) and it will be a fantastic opportunity to meet like-minded individuals too. It would be great to see of those interested in Brit Writers Awards, who are looking to go into journalism, turn up and I hope to see some next week! People can buy tickets from http://studentjournals.ticketbud.com/tsjturnstwo

In deadlocked election, one scenario: a Romney-Biden White House

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - As polls point to a close presidential election, the country faces the possibility of political chaos - from a repeat of the disputed 2000 election to the remote possibility of a new administration with a president from one party and a vice president from the other.

The most likely result on November 6 will be a clear, if close, victory for President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden or Republican Mitt Romney and his running mate, Paul Ryan.

But with surveys showing the presidential candidates running neck-and-neck just 2-1/2 weeks before Election Day and a number of battleground states still in play, a less straightforward outcome seems more possible.

One candidate could win more of the popular vote, but lose in the Electoral College, as when Republican George W. Bush defeated Democrat Al Gore 12 years ago after a bitter legal fight that went to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Or Obama and Romney could each win 269 of the 538 electoral votes divided between the states.

That would throw the outcome of the presidential race into the House of Representatives, which must name the president in the case of a tie. Republicans are expected to keep control of the House in the election, which would almost certainly mean a Romney victory.

But the vice presidency would be decided in the U.S. Senate, where Democrats currently have a majority. If they retained control, Biden would likely be selected. Republicans likely would have to win control of the Senate for Ryan to become vice president in a deadlocked election.

A further wrinkle is that the sitting vice president breaks tie votes in the Senate, meaning Biden could be in a position to cast the deciding vote for vice president in such a scenario.

"In the end, the odds still favor the popular and electoral vote heading in the same direction, but the chances of a split like the one in 2000 are very real, along with the distinct possibility of ambiguity and vote-counting issues once again putting the outcome in question," Charlie Cook, editor of the Cook Political Report, wrote in a column in the National Journal.

"Ugh," Cook added.

A prolonged legal fight, or a split administration could worry investors and worsen the political gridlock in Washington.

Both would be huge obstacles to dealing with the "fiscal cliff," the $600 billion in spending cuts and tax increases that could occur at the end of the year if lawmakers fail to reach an accord on shrinking the federal budget deficit.

DREADING A BUSH-GORE REPEAT

The bitter legal battle over the 2000 election lasted to mid-December, when the U.S. Supreme Court issued a ruling that gave Bush the White House. The divisions contributed to the partisanship that remains in Washington and state governments.

The Obama and Romney campaigns have been lining up legal teams in preparation for possible litigation after a close race, especially in light of new election laws approved by Republican-led legislatures in over a dozen states since 2010.

U.S. presidential elections are decided not by a winner-take-all national popular vote as in many countries. Instead, candidates compete in a system of state-by-state contests to win the 538 "electoral votes" assigned to the 50 states and Washington, D.C.

The votes are assigned roughly according to population. But since there is a minimum of three per state, they are assigned disproportionately, increasing the likelihood of a difference between how the electoral and popular votes come out.

For example, winning California, with 38 million people, garners 55 electoral votes - a ratio of one electoral vote to 685,000 people. Triumphing in Wyoming, with 568,000, adds three to a candidate's total, for a ratio of one electoral vote to 189,000 residents.

A candidate has won the popular vote but lost in the Electoral College in three of the 56 U.S. presidential elections.

There is also a historical precedent for a divided administration, albeit in the rather remote past.

"It would be kind of similar to what happened to (John) Adams and (Thomas) Jefferson," Villanova University political scientist Lara Brown said, referring to the second and third presidents of the United States, more than two centuries ago.

In 1796, Adams ran for the presidency as a Federalist. Jefferson, a Democratic-Republican, was one of his opponents. There was not yet any such thing as a "running mate."

When the votes were counted, Adams was first and became president. Jefferson, second, became vice president and spent his terms attacking Adams' policies.

The discord helped pave the way for the 12th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which established the procedure for electing the top two government officials, starting in 1804.

It prevented another divided administration for 207 years.

It will be clear in a few weeks whether that run of success will continue.

Facebook, Microsoft Helping U.K. Government Select And Train A ...

Computer science teaching in U.K. schools has been broken for years, having a soft focus on ICT teaching ? i.e. showing kids how to use computer software ? rather than teaching them how to use computers to create software. Earlier this year a U.K. government Minister described IT lessons as ?catastrophically boring?. Those remarks followed some choice words from?Google?s Eric Schmidt?last year when he warned the nation was throwing away its computing heritage?by focusing on arts teaching at the expense of computer science.

Since then, the government has been knocking heads together to try to get a handle on the problem ? last?year it announced plans to develop new ?IT-centric? qualifications, to?teach schoolkids core principles of computer programming, and in January the Education Secretary reiterated their intention to scrap the derided ICT curriculum?and replace it with a new computer science curriculum. It?s currently carrying out a curriculum review to come up with a new program of study for the subject ? with an all-new computer science curriculum due to land in September 2014.

Today the government has revealed another plank in the strategy ? announcing?measures to attract a new generation of computer science teachers that have the skills to teach bona fide?computing, rather than run lessons in how to use Microsoft Word. Slightly ironic, then, that it?s getting help from Microsoft to overhaul IT teaching.?Professor Chris Bishop, Distinguished Scientist at Microsoft Research, did not note this irony in his supporting statement on the announcement

Microsoft is passionate about improving the way that we teach technology in schools, but also how we use technology to teach. As founding members of the Computing at School working group, we?ve been working to inspire both teachers and young people about the importance of computer science for a number of years.

Scholarships such as those announced today will be vital in ensuring that the UK maintains a healthy pipeline of computer science talent, which can only be a positive thing for this country?s future prosperity.

As well as working with Microsoft, the government is getting help from Facebook, IBM, BT and other companies for the new Computer Science Initial Teacher Training course ? which replaces the current Information and Communications Technology courses (which have now lost their government funding). Facebook, Microsoft et al have also been involved in helping draw up a document?that sets out?minimum requirements for subject knowledge for budding computer science teachers applying to the new training course.

Around 50 scholarships worth ?20,000 each will be available in the first year with the aim of attracting top graduates into IT teaching. The scholarships will be open to applications from any graduate with a 2.1 or first class degree ? again, somewhat ironic, being as the humanities graduates so derided by Schmidt will apparently be able to apply to becoming computer science teachers.?However?applications will also have to demonstrate they have an understanding of a variety of key computer science concepts and processes?in order to be accepted on the training ? such as algorithms and computational models.

A spokesman for the Department for Education told me the reason the government is not stipulating that applicants to the teaching course have a computing degree is to ensure suitable candidates who hold other degrees, such as in mathematics, aren?t excluded.

Facebook and co are also likely to be involved in the selection process of teachers for the scholarship ? helping to interview potential candidates, said the spokesman. ?Facebook?s?Simon Milner, Director of Public Policy for UK & Ireland, noted in a statement: ?It is a positive step to help get high quality computer science teachers in schools, and therefore ensure more young people gain the right skills to join and lead our digital industries.?

Existing ICT teachers are also being targeted for upskilling by another government initiative announced today which will see 500 existing ICT teachers provided with computer science training in the first year of the program. This scheme is being part funded through a ?150,000 government grant.

SCTE: ATCi adds cable MSOs as satellite customers | Rapid TV News

Michelle Clancy | 19-10-2012

Satellite operator Antenna Technology Communications Inc. (ATCi), a provider of commercial satellite communications services, has announced continuing traction in the North American market with the addition of major U.S. cable MSOs to its roster of clients.

The operators, not publicly named, have implemented Simulsat-5b retrofit kits in several sites across the United States, the company said. The Simulsat-5b system was specifically designed to economically improve upon the longstanding full-arc flexibility of multibeam antennas present in the original Simulsat-5. Simulsat-5 transitions seamlessly to the improved Simulsat-5b, which was designed from the ground up using the latest composite fabrication, computer simulation and solid modeling technologies, ATCi said.

"In today's demanding digital satellite environment, ATCi's Simulsat-5b system represents a significant step forward in multibeam satellite technology, which provides the margin satellite users need to keep their services up and online," said ATCi CEO Gary Hatch. "With the advent of MPEG-4/DVBS2 modulation, upgrading our older Simulsat customers' systems to the latest high-tolerance design is critical for them to maintain the highest quality digital reception."

He added, "The update is extremely quick and cost-effective in that our customers keep their original mount and simply update with a new reflector and feedbox during their standard maintenance window."

ATCi is displaying Simulsat-5b along with its other communication solutions and systems at SCTE Cable-Tec Expo, taking place 17-19 October in Orlando.

There Is Simply No End To The Steak Frites At Garces Trading Co ...

Though nothing short of ?Free Sex? jumps out as us like ?Endless?, those belt-loosening establishments usually manifest themselves as establishments with the words Buffet or Corral where they offer gloppy chafing dishes of fatty starches or starchy fats. To see the word appear at a respectable, why-don?t-you-put-on-your-nice-shirt bistro like Garces Trading Company has us skipping lunch in anticipation. Chef Jose Garces was recently in Southern France and has decided to bring back ?Endless Steak Frites? for us to enjoy.

?This summer, my family and I traveled to Provence to celebrate my birthday, and I fell in love with French bistro fare all over again,? says Chef Garces, a James Beard Award winner who is also one of Food Network?s Iron Chefs and regularly competes on Iron Chef America. ?This rustic-yet-decadent meal is my fond tribute to the exceptional steak frites we enjoyed abroad.?

The Steak Frites meal, which is served during lunch and dinner, starts with a green salad and includes endless grilled hanger steak, served alongside house duck fat French fries with a choice of three sauces: B?arnaise, an emulsification of egg yolk and clarified butter with white wine vinegar; Bordelaise, a port wine reduction with veal demiglace and bone marrow; and Sauce au Poivre Vert, a creamy green peppercorn sauce made with brandy and Dijon mustard. Guests order their steak cooked to the temperature they prefer, and unlimited, additional servings are available upon request. At just $25 per person, plus tax and gratuity, it is one of the city?s most affordable steak dinners.

Garces Trading Company offers a plethora of beverages to enjoy with the steak frites ranging from the innovative house-bottled carbonated cocktails to craft beers and sangria or a selection from the European wine list. Guests are also welcome to purchase a bottle of wine from the on-site wine boutique. After the first bottle, there is a $10 corkage fee per bottle.

So come hungry, and if you?re gonna wear sweatpants, at least make them velour.
