Just last week, Ken McRoyal learned he had earned himself a scholarship for his senior season with the Idaho Vandals. On Sunday, someone shot and killed him at a party in Los Angeles.
"It's a devastating loss," said coach Robb Akey in a statement sent to the media on Sunday. "We've lost a brother, a teammate, a family member. But more importantly, a momma lost her son today. All of our prayers go to the family that they can be strong in their healing from this tragedy."
Details about McRoyal's death started to emerge early Monday morning, as the Los Angeles Times reported he was shot in the upper body around 1:30 a.m. at the Brewery Lofts in Lincoln Heights. He was attending a birthday party. It is still unclear whether McRoyal was the intended target, or if he was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.
McRoyal moved to California from Louisiana in the wake of Hurricane Katrina in 2005. He attended EL Camino Junior College and then walked on at Idaho to join his cousin on the team, Dominique Blackman, according to KTLA.
McRoyal leaves behind a girlfriend and a 1-year-old daughter.
