The honest truth is that these same helpful tips can be quite helpful in a personal capacity as well as a professional capacity. There is so much more to self improvement than emotions. Is it hard for you to focus and stay on task? Are you forgetful even if you promised that you wouldn?t be anymore? This is the reason that good lists are good ideas. Write down each of the things that you need to do each day. Even things you might think you would remember like "check voice mail" and "call back Mom." Lists will help you keep track of the things that you should be doing?not just in this moment but in the future too. If you feel your focus start to wane, just look at your list. This will remind you of your responsibilities and help you stay on track. Plus, crossing things off of your list can feel incredibly satisfying. If you don?t know something, admit it and if you need help, admit that too. Nobody knows everything. If you act as if you are, then people aren?t going to want to have much to do with you. There will be no trust placed in you. You won?t appear to be a leader. You just appear pompous. When you request assistance and acknowledge the fact that you don?t know everything, you are showing that you?d prefer to learn than make a mistake. You and your team will be able to establish a trustworthy relationship. It also helps you build rapport, which helps keep your business productive and profitable. It?s essential to work with people, not just above them.
Reachable goals are your best bet. The very best way to accomplish this is to start with a large goal and then break it apart into smaller chunks that you can actually accomplish this goal. From there, break the small pieces into even smaller pieces. It is a lot easier to keep working if you are always able to reach the smaller goals. If you are always working toward the largest goals, things are going to start to feel tedious but if you are crossing items off of your list all of the time, you?ll actually see the progress that you are making to get to the big stuff. This makes it easier to keep working until you actually accomplish what you set out to accomplish.
To make your business as profitable as possible, you should do your best to focus on things that will lead to self-improvement for yourself and your business. Everything you do can benefit from the tips we have provided. As you learn you?ll come up with plenty of other things you can do.
Ha ha can you believe the shit people say?

The recent viral video of a random white dude proposing to his girlfriend sent chills down my spine. ?I am not a hopeless romantic, but I am hopelessly in love with the potential and future of the black family in America. ?For some reason, there was something about this video that lit a fuse in its viewers, leading me to reflect on some of the barriers that keep all of us from showing our best selves when we enter into relationships.
I am no relationship guru, but I resubmit that if Steve Harvey is qualified to talk about relationships, then so am I. When I speak with my daughters about love, I think about the bitterness that some of us can have from past disappointments, creating a tough shell of cold disregard to protect the most vulnerable part of our spirit. ?We enter relationships with itchy trigger fingers and toxic predispositions, causing us to wait for the other person to do something that will confirm that he/she is the dog that we expect that person to be.
In the black community, the lack of trust between men and women can sometimes turn love into war.? Starting with the first disappointments from the missing father or a college heartbreak, love can become an exercise of saving face and not being played, which is not conducive to building lasting families. ?As a result, divorce rates are through the roof, babymama-itis is at an all-time high, and STD rates are skyrocketing as people in their twenties and thirties bounce from one broken relationship to another.

What I enjoyed about this video is that there is something amazing that happens when one party doesn?t allow fear to keep him/her from expressing deep-seated affection for another person. ?The man in this video made himself look like a damn fool to show this woman how much he loves her. ?Not to say that we should get all of our cues from white people (you know how I feel about that, they are no better than us), but there is something that can be learned from everyone, and this guy teaches all of us a great lesson on love.
If your relationships consistently fall apart, or you find that your so-called love life has become a haven of treachery and emotional espionage, you might want to take a look in the mirror and determine if the person ?you see is emotionally equipped to take the risks necessary to experience true love. ?You must also determine if you are capable of identifying people who will reflect that love back at you and not selfishly absorb it in order to maintain control. ?Without taking risk, there is little reward, so you can?t expect to witness the highs of lasting love if you live life with your cards held close to your vest.
That?s what I learned from the random white dude proposing to his girlfriend.
Never provide your services to someone else without a contract. Contracts are the foundation of making a business transaction work for both parties.
It can be extremely easy to become engulfed by work when you work from home. You should separate your work and personal life by establishing a specific work zone, as well as setting clear work hours to leave time for your personal life.
If you are the sole owner of your home business, make sure you are the sole financial decision maker as well. Consider the choice to hand out your company credit card carefully, as your ability to include purchases in a tax write off may be negatively influenced.
It is a good idea to have all your contracts for home business in a single place so that they are easy to locate. If you have to discuss something with your client, you will know where they are. You should also keep your own contracts, such as with your phone company or Internet provider, in the same place in case YOU have to battle with THEM over service!
It is important to get yourself a business specific email account so you can easily keep business and personal emails separate. You should choose different email providers for your personal and business emails. For example, use gmail for your personal mail, and Outlook for your business mail.
When marketing your business on social networks, be sure to avoid getting drawn into the social aspect of the site. If you spend a lot of time socializing on networks, you may be wasting precious time. This is why you should prevent chatting on Facebook until after work.
Make sure you have a home business that is easy and fits your schedule. If it starts to be a problem for your family, you should think up a different type of business.
If you can, try and increase your income by establishing membership fees. Subscriptions can generate recurring income flows and for most sites, it is pretty simple to implement.
As you have just learned, there are many people trying to sell you on scams. However, as you?ve learned throughout this article, there are also many common-sense tips and tactics that you can use in order to grow your home business. If you?re willing to put in the work, you can certainly be successful.
Marketing is very important for any business. It can make the difference between success and failure. Would you invest thousands on getting your business off the ground, developing your products and services, getting the right staff and infrastructure and let it fail due to lack of marketing?
It does not matter whether your business is a one-person-business or a large multi-national, it is important to get the word out. Ultimately, more leads mean more customers which in turn means, more income. And since it is all online with very little overheads, this means bigger profits!!!

Older adults may need more vitamin D to prevent mobility difficultiesPublic release date: 29-May-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ]

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. May 29, 2012 Older adults who don't get enough vitamin D either from diet, supplements or sun exposure may be at increased risk of developing mobility limitations and disability, according to new research from Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.
"This is one of the first studies to look at the association of vitamin D and the onset of new mobility limitations or disability in older adults," said lead author Denise Houston, Ph.D., R.D., a nutrition epidemiologist in the Wake Forest Baptist Department of Geriatrics and Gerontology. Houston researches vitamin D and its effects on physical function.
The study, published online this month in the Journal of Gerontology: Medical Sciences, analyzed the association between vitamin D and onset of mobility limitation and disability over six years of follow-up using data from the National Institute on Aging's Health, Aging, and Body Composition (Health ABC) study. Mobility limitation and disability are defined as any difficulty or inability to walk several blocks or climb a flight of stairs, respectively.
Of the 3,075 community-dwelling black and white men and women aged 70-79 who were enrolled, data from 2,099 participants was used for this study. Eligible participants reported no difficulty walking one-fourth mile, climbing 10 steps, or performing basic, daily living activities, and were free of life-threatening illness. Vitamin D levels were measured in the blood at the beginning of the study. Occurrence of mobility limitation and disability during follow-up was assessed during annual clinic visits alternating with telephone interviews every six months over six years.
"We observed about a 30 percent increased risk of mobility limitations for those older adults who had low levels of vitamin D, and almost a two-fold higher risk of mobility disability," Houston said.
Houston said vitamin D plays an important role in muscle function, so it is plausible that low levels of the vitamin could result in the onset of decreased lower muscle strength and physical performance. Vitamin D may also indirectly affect physical function as low vitamin D levels have also been associated with diabetes, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease and lung disease conditions that are frequent causes of decline in physical function. Houston said people get vitamin D when it is naturally produced in the skin by sun exposure, by eating foods with vitamin D, such as fortified milk, juice and cereals, and by taking vitamin D supplements.
"About one-third of older adults have low vitamin D levels," she said. "It's difficult to get enough vitamin D through diet alone and older adults, who may not spend much time outdoors, may need to take a vitamin D supplement."
Current recommendations call for people over age 70 to get 800 International Units of vitamin D daily in their diet or supplements. Houston pointed out that current dietary recommendations are based solely on vitamin D's effects on bone health.
"Higher amounts of vitamin D may be needed for the preservation of muscle strength and physical function as well as other health conditions," she said. "However, clinical trials are needed to determine whether increasing vitamin D levels through diet or supplements has an effect on physical function."

I am looking for people to fill in the slots of the Outlaws, Sheriff, and Deputies. If you are interested in a real Western RP (No steampunk, magic, etc), then please do take part.
The story is fictional, as in setting, but all of the rest is made to be factual of that time period. The backdrop is that this small town discovered gold in one of its rivers, however, the largest sum of it is found in Indian territory. There will be adventures, and (for lack of a better term) quests to achieve financial wealth and a name. So far I have two characters down, and I would like more.
Natives can also be played, or they will be NPC'ed. Truth me told, I would rather have people play them rather than do all of the work myself. That is a lot of controlling.
At the moment, I could use the Outlaw slots being taken up. Their names are horrific (I know this), and they can be changed to the will of the typists that take them. If not, they will remain the same.
Are you thinking about pursuing other ventures and becoming your own boss? Well, you are most certainly not alone in this. All over the world, there are plenty of people who have long been planning change in their lives. The idea of owning your own business is certainly a dream for many. After all, who wouldn?t want to have more control over the way they spend their time whilst still making ends meet? Luckily, the internet has provided us with plenty of different opportunities when it comes to pursuing this dream without having to break the bank. If you?ve ever considered owning a traditional brick and mortar business, then you are well aware of the costs involved. But you wouldn?t have to worry about that if you opt to do things online. Now, there are certainly many different things that you can do, but which of the different options is the best home based business? Whilst there is no specific answer to this question as it would vary depending upon the person?s preferences and interests, there are certain niches that are a bit more profitable than others so you might also want to consider looking into those.
?
With that said, here are a few examples of some of the most common home based businesses that a lot of people have ventured into.
?
Affiliate Marketing ? If you want a good, profitable home based business without having to invest any money at all then affiliate marketing just might be thing for you. Basically, all you really need to have is a website or a blog which can be acquired for free from various online hosts. The money that you can earn from becoming an affiliate would vary according to the kind of work that you do. You can earn a few dollars from directing traffic from your website to blog to the merchant?s website or you can earn about 35% or more in terms of commission whenever you get someone to purchase something from the merchant?s website. Of course, this would require plenty of work on your part. Online marketing is considered by many to be the best home based business but it isn?t the easiest thing for people to learn. However, if you really put your heart into it, you would be able to learn quickly. Remember, you cannot go into the battlefield without having any idea about how things work so study and research before you get started.
?
Get Crafty ? Are you into creating arts and crafts? If that is the case then why not make money off of your creations. This is a great way to start your own business since you?re doing something that you love. It wouldn?t feel like work at all! Here are a few ideas.
?
Make Accessories ? If you?re good at creating wearable items such as accessories, then do consider creating a brand for yourself online. You can market the products to people who have similar tastes and style. Make Knits ? If you thought that this was only a seasonal thing, then you were mistaken. Knits can be worn all year round depending upon the kind of item or garment. Make scarves, mittens and cardigans for winter and fall. Berets, headbands and even knit bracelets should be great for spring and summer.

Invest Weekend takes place in Minsk.
Yulia Alexandrova reports: Only 10 percent of the participants of the Invest Weekend receive a start-up budget. The rest receive consultations from experts. (Alexander Bulakh, organizer of the Invest Weekend, entrepreneur) Today businessmen invest into high technology business projects, or start-ups. This year projects, the authors of which are women, stood out separately. An additional area was given for their presentation. (Daria Terekhova, participant of the Invest Weekend) The participants of this year's Invest Weekend are sure that it's not necessary to have a diploma of an economist to carry on business. A bright example is Steve Jobs, who without higher education turned over the idea of ordinary gadgets.

Posted by HealthLover on May 27, 2012 in Health and Fitness ? No comments
Health and fitness clubs have become very popular because they are great places to get into shape or stay that way.? In the modern age, there are so many tools for doing the physical work that people did many years ago.? People usually do not have to walk to work or the grocery store.? There are cars, subway systems and busses that will take people wherever they need to be at any given time.? People do not have to wash their clothes by hand or mow the lawn with a push mower.? Many people spend a good portion of the waking hours sitting in meetings or at their desks.
Another advantage to visiting a fitness center is that it provides the right kind of motivation to keep you fit and most people actually look forward expectantly to when they will next be able to visit the center, instead of finding excuses not to exercise. Also, even though most people today live a very busy life, they should still take out some time to do something constructive and positive about remaining fit, and in any case, it is a much better alternative than simply lounging about or watching TV programs, that add to the problem rather than do anything positive.
Fitness clubs have different types of equipment for their clients, but most of these fitness clubs have similar types of equipment that can be used for physical health.? Of course, mental health is often improved when physical health is good.? Fitness clubs usually have enough treadmills for all of their members.? There are also elliptical machines that can provide for cardiovascular fitness when used properly.? Some of these clubs have rowing machines and stationary bicycles that members can use for vigorous workouts.
A good fitness club will usually have great equipment for muscle toning exercises.? These clubs often have circuits of weight machines that can be used to tone many of the muscles in the body.? There are also a variety of free weights for toning muscles.? Fitness clubs often have a number of classes for physical training.
This area usually has some free weights and machines for improving muscle tone.? There are luxurious clubs that have steam rooms, saunas and Turkish baths.? There are often shops in the centers where people can buy fitness equipment for use at home.? The shops often have nutritional bars and foods that should help clients improve their physical fitness.? Some centers have facilities so the members can relax and socialize with others.? Most clients are very happy that they have a place to improve their physical fitness.

The current feature at the Page 69 Test: The Kissing List by Stephanie Reents.
About the book, from the publisher:
An inventive debut that recalls the imagination of Aimee Bender and the sardonic wit of Lorrie Moore.
The interlocking stories in The Kissing List feature an unforgettable group of young women ? Sylvie, Anna, Frances, Maureen ? as their lives connect, first during a year abroad at Oxford, then later as they move to New York on the cusp of adulthood. We follow each of them as they navigate the treachery of first dates, temp jobs and roommates, failed relationships and unexpected affairs ? all the things that make their lives seem full of possibility, but also rife with potential disappointment.
Shot through with laugh-out-loud lines, yet still wrenchingly emotional and resonant, The Kissing List is a book about women who bravely defy expectations and take outrageous chances in the face of a life that might turn out to be anything less than extraordinary.

(CNN) ? After Mitt Romney's campaign said the candidate would "stand up to China on trade" in a new ad this week, former GOP presidential candidate Jon Huntsman on Thursday said Romney was using "typical" campaign rhetoric.
"This is a typical trajectory, where during a campaign season you're going to talk about China in ways that you're hearing today," Huntsman, also a former U.S. Ambassador to China, said on CNN's "Erin Burnett OutFront."
? Follow the Ticker on Twitter: @PoliticalTicker
He added: "Then you get in office."
Huntsman was critical of Romney during the Republican primary, arguing his opponent's language on China could lead to a "trade war." On Thursday, Huntsman did not back down from his earlier criticism, saying the ties between the U.S. and China makes for "a complicated relationship."
"It's no surprise during a campaign season, you're going to have people use China as an issue," he said. "Bill Clinton did it when he talked about the Bushes of Beijing. Ronald Reagan did it in 1980."
In the end, however, Huntsman, who endorsed Romney when he suspended his own presidential campaign in January, said he had faith Romney could help improve the trade situation.
"I think Mitt Romney has the prospect of doing that which is most important to the U.S.-China relationship: strengthening our own domestic economy and giving life and confidence to our creative class so we can get back on our feet," he said.
The emergence of an underground gay group at Biola University has led to a wide-ranging debate about Christianity and homosexuality.
By John Boxley and Ashley Bornancin, NBC News
LA MIRADA, Calif.?-- On the same day President Obama became the first U.S. president to come out in support of same-sex marriage, a group of students announced the presence of the "Biola Queer Underground" at this small evangelical university, touching off a?highly-charged debate about Christianity and homosexuality.
The group launched a website and posted flyers around the Biola?University campus May 9?with the following message: "We want to bring to light the presence of the LGBTQ community at Biola. Despite what some may assume, there are Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals, Transgender, and Queers at Biola. We are Biola's students, alumni, employees, and fellow followers of Christ. We want to be treated with equality and respected as another facet of Biola's diversity."
The emergence of the group, whose members remain anonymous, has shaken this 104-year-old Christian college in Southern California.?Like many schools rooted in evangelical?Christianity,?Biola has a code of standards that includes prohibitions on sex outside of marriage and same-sex relationships: Sex is "designed by God to be expressed solely within a marriage between a husband and wife," according to Biola's student handbook, which goes on to say that "sexual misconduct, depending on the facts and circumstances of each case will result in disciplinary action."
With debate raging over the group and its aims, Biola President Barry Corey told students that the school has no intention of changing its policy to "fit increasingly accepted ethical or moral norms. In particular, we don't need to modernize or bend our biblically based position on sexual ethics."
The school also issued a new statement on ?human sexuality? which calls same-sex relationships "illegitimate moral options for the confessing Christian.? The statement was in the works before the gay group announced itself, but BQU said it showed the "one-sided" nature of the conversation, with no room for those who believe homosexuality isn't sinful.
Chris Grace, vice president for student development at Biola, said the school would like to engage in conversation with the underground group but has been stymied by the members' anonymity. ?We really are at a disadvantage here because we don?t know who these people are,? Grace said, adding that the university would "love and welcome a conversation with them and that?s what we are hoping for."
But members of BQU, who would only comment for this story anonymously, fear that by "coming out" they would be punished and possibly expelled. They said they consider themselves Christians "first and foremost" and love Biola, and are not looking to create "a war" on campus, but they are looking to have an open discussion about what it means to be Christian and gay.
Eventually, Members of the group would like to "come out" and be open about their sexuality. "It?s important to our integrity to not have parts of us be hidden even among the Christian community,? a member said.
One of the members said there is a lot of guilt in the Christian community over homosexuality, but wonders if that guilt is coming from "God, the Holy Spirit or is that guilt coming from sections of the Christian society?"
Visit "Biola Queer Underground" to read members' stories
"Biola is probably not going to change their doctrinal stance for a while; they are going to have their theological stance being against homosexuality for quite some time, that doesn't mean the culture, doesn?t mean they have to discipline openly gay students,? said one of the group?s leaders.
Grace dismissed the notion that students who are "struggling with homosexuality" would face expulsion. "I guess you'd almost call that a myth that students would get expelled for that," Grace said. Instead, Biola offers students an "open-door policy" to talk about their struggles and receive spiritual counseling. But he makes it clear that for a student who identifies as gay and is engaging in "gay behavior and unwilling to uphold our community standards we would initiate the dismissal process."
Debate about the group has raged among students and in the campus newspaper.
Samuel Smith, a cinema and media arts major, objected to the fact the members won?t come forward. ?If you want an honest and true discussion about what they're going through, I feel they shouldn't be anonymous.?
Alexis Hughes, a biblical studies major, said the gay group?s anonymity is telling. "Obviously, if it's underground, they know it?s wrong and on some level they know they shouldn't be doing it"
Gabriela Cacanindin, a business major, was hopeful the wider campus would be open to hearing what the group has to say. "I hope that we are open to the dialogue that needs to happen... ."
But a female underground member says a true conversation is difficult. "I have sat in so many classes where we would a conversation about homosexuality and I can?t tell my story because I am too afraid of getting in trouble, so how is that a conversation at all?"
The group said they have received hate mail and they call some of the comments expressed in the school newspaper so painful that they had to quit reading it. One of them read, ?If you embrace the lifestyle, you are at odds with God and scripture, and it is extremely doubtful that you are a Christian.?
"We get questions, ?Why are you even in school, Why are you causing a ruckus, Why don?t you just leave??" one of the members told us.
Not discouraged, the members of the gay group say they are here to stay. And, they added, they have received plenty of support in the community and around the country.
"In some ways I'm shocked at how horrible people can be, but I'm also shocked at how wonderful people are too,? said one.
They draw comfort in the fact that?more Americans now support than oppose same-sex marriage, according to a recent Gallup poll, and are convinced that Biola will eventually "come around."
School officials already are looking ahead to next year, when Biola celebrates its 105th anniversary, and they said plans are in the works to facilitate an ?ongoing conversation? with students about homosexuality.

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's Queen Elizabeth will celebrate 60 years on the throne next month along with huge crowds expected for a pop concert at Buckingham Palace, a grand procession through the streets of London and a 1,000-strong flotilla along the River Thames.
The Diamond Jubilee comes just over a year after the royal wedding of Prince William, the queen's grandson, to Kate Middleton, a spectacular display of pomp and pageantry which has boosted the monarchy's popularity at home and abroad.
While international media attention has focused on the young Duke and Duchess of Cambridge since their marriage, in early June it is the queen who will be in the limelight as she becomes only the second British monarch to mark the milestone.
Queen Victoria also made it to 60 years in 1897, although the vast British Empire she reigned over at that time has all but vanished and royalty has become a largely symbolic institution with few real powers.
The queen has less than four years to go to become the longest serving British monarch, but she trails Thailand's King Bhumibol Adulyadej as the longest-serving living head of state.
Despite her age, courtiers and many commentators believe that 86-year-old Elizabeth remains an important figurehead in Britain and beyond, a symbol of stability and service that has taken on added weight during straitened economic times.
A poll published in Britain's Guardian newspaper on Friday showed public support for the queen was at a record high in spite of harsh economic times and growing cynicism towards politicians following a number of high-profile scandals.
The survey showed 69 percent of respondents thought Britain would be worse off without the monarchy, with 22 percent saying it would be better off - the largest margin between the opposing views since the poll was first commissioned in 1997.
"Historically people have turned to symbols of certainty, probity and solidity in times of crisis," said Robert Hardman, author of a recent biography of the monarch called "Our Queen" and a writer for the royal-friendly Daily Mail.
"People feel she's lived through all sorts of crises, not least the Second World War, and she's dependable."
FOUR-DAY WEEKEND
Members of the royal family have been marking the jubilee all year with tours both national and international, but the climax of the celebrations is a four-day weekend from June 2-5.
On Saturday, the queen indulges her life-long passion for horses with a visit to the Epsom Derby.
Sunday has been billed "The Big Jubilee Lunch" encouraging thousands of Britons to spill out on to the streets and share a meal with neighbours and friends.
Also on Sunday, arguably the most spectacular event takes place on the River Thames snaking through central London.
Up to 1,000 vessels from around the world will assemble to accompany the queen and her husband on the Royal Barge as they travel along the river, watched by a flag-waving, cheering crowd expected to number more than a million.
Paul McCartney and Elton John are among the artists set to perform at a pop concert outside Buckingham Palace on Monday, when a network of 2,012 beacons will also be lit across Britain and the Commonwealth of mostly former British colonies.
On Tuesday, the jubilee weekend concludes with a service of thanksgiving at St. Paul's Cathedral and a short carriage procession from Westminster to Buckingham Palace where the queen and her family will appear on the balcony.
Unlike the younger generation of royals whose status borders on that of celebrities, the queen has been a quieter, less splashy presence.
If anything, she may suffer from over-familiarity in the eyes of the British public, which sees her face on coins and stamps and in countless photographs of her in colour-coordinated outfits while on official visits.
"We slightly overlooked the fact that she's done it for 60 years and suddenly realised that that's a great achievement," Hardman told Reuters.
"The jubilee coincides with a marked revival in interest in the royal family -- it's been a very good few years for them and not just because of the royal wedding."
MEDIA MESMERISED, POLLS UNCLEAR
Much of the British media and many broadcasters from the United States and beyond have given the monarchy overwhelmingly positive coverage in recent years, particularly since the 2011 wedding which was watched by up to two billion people worldwide.
Royalists say opinion polls such as the one in the Guardian have consistently shown solid support for the monarchy among the British public.
The republican movement, which has struggled to find a voice during the recent resurgence in royal interest, argues that the statistics tell a different picture.
Anti-monarchist group Republic quoted findings last month showing only 41 percent of Britons believed the royal family was a unifying force with 32 percent saying it made no difference.
Stephen Haseler, a prominent academic and critic of the monarchy, called the jubilee plans "unbelievable" at a time when the country was in a recession.
"This is Disneyland," he told Reuters. "She (the queen) is going to come down the River Thames in a barge, for God's sake, with all kinds of fireworks. This is kids' stuff, this is what you take kids to Disneyland to see and it's our head of state.
"You should be more dignified in a really serious recession. You ought to cut down on this nonsense. It's making us a bit of a laughing stock. What have we got to celebrate?"
The royal family officially costs taxpayers between 30 and 40 million pounds a year ($47-63 million), although the total does not include security and other outgoings. Republic estimates the cost at over 200 million pounds.
UPS AND DOWNS
Elizabeth was in Kenya with husband Philip when she learned of the death of her father, George VI, famously portrayed by Colin Firth in the Oscar-winning movie "The King's Speech".
Still in her mid-20s, she returned home to be greeted at the airport by Winston Churchill, one of 12 prime ministers to have served during her reign.
In 1953 her coronation in Westminster Abbey was televised for the first time and watched by millions of people globally.
Even her most ardent admirers admit that her reign has had its ups and downs, despite her image as a constant in a rapidly changing world.
The queen famously described 1992, marked by royal divorce, separation and a fire at Windsor Castle, as her "annus horribilis", yet things were to get worse.
In 1997, a year after divorcing heir-to-the-throne Prince Charles, the wildly popular Princess Diana was killed in a high speed car crash in Paris, dealing a serious blow to the royals.
The following decade, which included an enthusiastically celebrated golden jubilee in 2002 and the deaths of her mother and sister in the same year, saw the queen's public standing rebound.
The majority of commentators believe that while the queen is alive, the monarchy is unlikely to face a serious crisis.
That could change when her son Charles accedes the throne, some argue, because he is regarded as less predictable and diplomatic. William and Kate would be popular as king and queen, but they could have a long wait ahead.
