kent - the attempts: Sex, porn and moralism

As someone who is sex-positive and polyamorous, my views on
sexuality and relationships can be at odds with those of the largely monogamous,
sex-negative mainstream. So it was encouraging to read Jennifer Wilson?s critique of anti-porn, anti-casual sex advocates and their self-righteous moralising.
Wilson?s essay is set within the context of Australian pornography laws (which local
anti-porn campaigners deem insufficiently censorial), but her cogent arguments are not
restricted to any one country or culture. Take these for example:
In my opinion some campaigners are engaged in a moral battle to control who may desire whom, when and how. Their arguments are founded on conservative moral assumptions about what sex is or ought to be, how it can and can?t be performed, and by whom. To this end they define pornography as not about sex, but solely about violence against women.

Anti porn campaigners conflate sexual violence and exploitation with pornography to strengthen their argument against it, even though there?s a variety of porn available, from the inoffensive to the frightening. They allow no exceptions: their position is that all porn is bad because all porn is inherently violent and exploitative.

Wilson correctly points out the ethical biases of those who want to impose their own sexual values on others, and the false generalisations they employ to achieve that end. She also exposes the idealistic view of sex that anti-porn campaigners and other sex-negative types tend to have:

Anti porn campaigners often express a view of sex that is sentimental and euphemistic. Sex should be devoid of messiness, vulgarity, impulses to power and aggression of any kind. Certain sexual acts disgust them, as campaigner Gail Dines makes graphically apparent. What really matters in sex, they claim, is the relationship. Sex as the expression of complicated emotions, not all of them pretty, sex as a performance of erotic power, male or female, and sex as a means of gratifying physical desire without emotional commitment, is apparently abhorrent to them.

It is this commonly held ideal of sex being special only in the context of a monogamous relationship that polyamorous people like me reject. The very term ?casual sex? implies that enjoying sex outside of a monogamous relationship is somehow less meaningful, less valuable, to both parties involved. Casual sex is cheap sex, unlike the premium monogamous stuff. But this smug, disdainful view isn?t supported by any evidence. There are no empirical, objectively verifiable facts showing conclusively that safe and consensual casual sex is less beneficial or more pernicious than monogamous sex. And the a priori premise of anti-casual sex arguments put forth by those like Emma Rush and Clive Hamilton is often rooted in religious soil. As Wilson writes:

Claims of the rightness of a sexuality confined to ?loving relationships? and the alleged profanity of casual sex must refer to the commandments of some metaphysical authority, unless Rush and Hamilton assume an infallible authority for themselves. Alternatively, their positions are social constructs, and if that is the case, we need to be convinced why they ought to have more influence over us than any other social construct. Empirical evidence for claims is the best way to establish this. Rush and Hamilton et al need to prove the ?sacredness? of sex, the profanity of casual sex, and the need to confine sex to loving relationships, or risk being perceived as founding their campaign in a crypto theology that is of no real consequence to anyone other than those who believe in it.

Precisely.

Russell Blackford (who blogged about Wilson?s essay and led me to it) has this to say about the issue:
The recurrent theme seems to be that [anti-porn campaigners] want to ensure that our society decisively privileges sex within committed, loving, monogamous (though, to be fair, not necessarily heterosexual with all these campaigners) relationships. This should be privileged to such an extent that no messages favouring other kinds of sexual activity should be tolerated - all such messages should be subjected at least to strong moral(istic) criticism and possibly to some kind of legal deterrence.

If that's not what these people are really saying, let them clarify it, please, because I agree with Wilson that that's how it often comes across from the likes of Emma Rush and Clive Hamilton. Wilson quotes Hamilton as saying: ?Perhaps this is why many people are left with a vague feeling that each time they have casual sex they give away a little of themselves, that something sacred is profaned and they are diminished as a result. Casual sex truly is meaningless sex.?

Well, it may be that ?many people? feel like that, especially if they've been socialised to feel like that. It may also be that many other people do not feel like that at all, and perhaps we shouldn't support socialising young people to feel like that.

Blackford?s last comments suggest a chicken-or-egg question. Do people, young or old, who have casual sex think less of themselves because a sex-negative society has taught them to see casual sex as demeaning even though it isn?t? Or is casual sex inherently demeaning, a fact that society is simply recognising and attempting to mitigate with its sex-negativity? I?m betting that it?s the former.

How TwitchTV Built a Vibrant Community Around Game Streaming

If you?re ditching cable, there are many alternative content destinations online. If you?re a gamer, one of those is probably TwitchTV.

TwitchTV was started in June 2011 by Justin.tv founders Justin Kan and Emmett Shear. Since launch, TwitchTV has built an audience of 16 million visitors per month, with a growth rate of about 11% per month, according to Kan. Not only that, but those on the site stay and watch for an average of 47 minutes.

What are they watching? Usually, live broadcasts of gamers playing Skyrim, Mass Effect 3, or even classics like StarCraft, Halo and Street Fighter X Tekken.

Kan compares the rise in e-sport popularity to the rise of poker 20 years ago. While poker was a game many had enjoyed at home for years, the advent of cameras that could display the players? hands to the television audience turned it into a spectator sport. Similarly, gaming is a multi-billion dollar industry, and now the technology is allowing people to stream their own content and spectate more easily.

?Poker started to be shown on ESPN. We are the ESPN of e-sports,? Kan said.

?Don?t wait for someone to represent you. Start your own stream and get involved.?

TwitchTV differs from ESPN in that anyone with the right tools can stream their own content. Marcus Graham, better known as djWHEAT, has been streaming games to spectators for the last 10 years. He said TwitchTV has seen a rise in the number people of streaming games, from double-digits to an individual streamer with thousands of watchers. Not only that, he says gamers are learning they can make money from their streams ? sometimes enough to supplant a full-time job.

SEE ALSO: Move Over, Super Bowl. Spectator Gaming Reaches Millions Online

TwitchTV helps users monetize by allowing them to place ads in their streams. Kan said the advertising system was unique because streamers could place as many ads as they wanted in places that made sense with the content.

?I?m excited to be the ultimate level of tech entrepreneur. I set my own schedule and create my own content,? Graham said. ?Now so many other people realize they can do this, too.?

Graham said TwitchTV is working on tools that will make it even easier for gamers to share their content, and he hopes that the next-generation consoles will feature tools making it easier to stream games. It?s not only about the tools though; gamers running streams have to learn how to entertain, engage and capture a loyal audience.

TwitchTV offers its streamers tools to interact with their audience, most importantly a chat that runs on the right side of their stream. It?s the main way for the streaming audience to interact with what?s being broadcast, and with each other. Graham said people come into his chats to talk to each other as well as to be entertained. He also sees people drop in even if he?s not broadcasting just to chat about games.

He also said some popular content creators are allowing their TwitchTV subscribers to play matches against them on the stream.

?It?d be like if you were a huge basketball fan and got to play a game against Michael Jordan.?

Jared Rea, the community manager for TwitchTV, said interactions the players and audience have with each other are what allow the community to grow as a whole, even as they host such a varied amount of game content.

?Almost like San Francisco?s culture and community varies from block to block, TwitchTV?s community varies wildly,? said Rea. ?All the jokes in the fighting community are very different than the Minecraft community. But if you hang around, you?ll start to see a lot of familiar faces across communities.?

Rea?s job at TwitchTV, along with a whole community team, is to address and balance all the needs of this microcosm, as well as to surface the best content from each of them to feature on the main site.

?There?s a big push and pull sometimes between the casual and hardcore gamers, but at the end of the day I try to know as much about everything. I fight for the users,? said Rea, who is also a former game journalist and has been involved with the gaming culture for years.

TwitchTV?s explosive growth can be attributed to the strong community and the democratization of content creation ? it gives gamers a place to belong, said Rea. He said the common gamer mentality has always felt a little out of the mainstream.

?Don?t wait for someone to represent you. Start your own stream and get involved,? he said.

The user empowerment has helped TwitchTV expand rapidly. Graham called the growth ?astronomical,? and he doesn?t think it will be long before TwitchTV becomes more mainstream.

?I don?t even have to hope too hard in some cases,? he said. ?The numbers are attracting eyeballs that weren?t looking at us before.?

Some of those eyeballs are big commercial advertisers, said Kan. He said more brands than before are sponsoring shows and players, and there is an emergence of big networks like Major League Gaming.

Even with the rapid growth, Rea said those interested in becoming part of the TwitchTV community will find it welcoming.

Communication ? Always and Forever the Great (Political ...

Englishman Francis Bacon once stated that, ?Knowledge is power.? And the greatest dissemination of knowledge is brought upon by the various channels of communication that wielders of knowledge have had at their disposal. In fact, it would not be a stretch to claim that communication itself is a greater political tool than any charismatic politician or convincing demagogue.

From the rise of the printing press to the emergence of satellite radio, communication channels have gone through a great many transformations over the years. But regardless of era, whoever owns communicative tools can hold sway ? for better or for worse ? over a nation?s general populace. In the Soviet Union?s case, Soviet rulers were highly invested in communication. But rather than emphasize the horizontal impact that a device such as a telephone may have had for its citizens, the rulers instead opted for loudspeakers, adopting a top-down model where communication was a one-way street. Loudspeakers eventually gave (or shared) way with state-controlled broadcasting, a development reflective of ?the regime?s general effort to repress the spontaneous organization of civil society (Starr 9). The telephones that did exist were state-controlled as well, forcing long-distance calls through the Soviet capitol for surveillance purposes. Opposite of the political left, Nazi Germany used similar communication channels to stir up fervent nationalism. Nazi propaganda included but was not limited to radio broadcasts, huge detailed posters, and film, the most famous being Leni Riefenstahl?s Triumph of the Will.

It is admittedly easy to pick on foes of the past, but the United States and its citizens have also ? again, for better or for worse ? used communication channels for political gain. William Randolph Hearst?s yellow journalism essentially provided a sensationalist catalyst that not only spurred the country into the Spanish-American War, but also springboarded Hearst?s own political aspirations. Franklin D. Roosevelt?s radio series of fireside chats arguably played a positive impact in his popularity as the only four-term president in American history. More recently, the tug-and-pull between conservative and liberal media has reached a crescendo, with each side hoping to exert a greater influence than the other on the country?s political direction. The current battle in Texas over the content of grade school history books provides one of the latest examples. Who knew that the classic communication device of the written word would centuries later serve as a political battleground, and drag hundreds of thousands of children with it?

If nothing else, the textbook battle proves the timelessness of even the most antiquated forms of communication. As Paul Starr suggests:

?For fear of the power others might acquire against them, ruling elites have often kept knowledge secret, limited public discussion, and controlled religion, education, and science so as to prevent their subjects from acquiring sensitive information and dangerous ideas.? (Starr 8).

Fortunately, Starr?s outlook isn?t completely bleak:

??Yet in the modern world, notwithstanding that interest, the sphere of public information has grown, independent channels of civil society have increased, and scientific and educational institutions have gained greater autonomy? (Starr 8).

The advent of the internet and mobile communication devices do provide hope for a future with more equal footing in regards to knowledge ? and, consequently, power. But this simply plays into the long-standing hypodermic-needle school of thought, that the masses are liable to soak up whatever ?knowledge? is hurled in their direction. The hypodermic-needle theory may not be a flawless interpretation of how communication affects society, but if history is any indication, then it certainly has its bearing.

Libya seeks Gaddafi spy chief handover by Mauritania

TRIPOLI/PARIS (Reuters) - Libya said on Sunday it was sending a delegation to Mauritania to press for the extradition of Muammar Gaddafi's intelligence chief Abdallah al-Senussi and Interpol called for his handover to promote rule of law in the North African state.

Senussi, 62, the last significant Gaddafi associate on the run since the dictator's overthrow and death in a popular revolt last year, was arrested in the West African state after his arrival late on Friday on a flight from Morocco.

Senussi was being held at the headquarters of the Mauritania's security service in the capital Nouakchott, sources there said, and diplomatic sources said he was carrying several false passports when detained.

Despite support from Interpol, Libya's interim government may get embroiled in a legal tug-of-war with France and the International Criminal Court (ICC) over Senussi as they also want to put him on trial.

Senussi, who for decades inspired fear and hatred among many Libyans, is sought by the Hague-based ICC on charges of crimes against humanity over security force attacks on anti-Gaddafi protesters during the eight-month uprising.

Interpol, the international police organization based in Lyon, France, said it had issued a Red Notice for Senussi at Libya's behest requesting member states to arrest him, if found on their soil, for fraud offences including embezzling public funds and misuse of power for personal benefit.

A Libyan government spokesman said on Saturday Tripoli had sent a request for Senussi's handover through Interpol, while France had filed a competing extradition request, according to a presidential palace source.

Interpol previously circulated a Red Notice for Senussi at the ICC's request in September 2011 for crimes against humanity.

"Interpol has committed itself to supporting Libya's efforts to achieve its goal of rebuilding their country and being guided by the rule of law, and clearly their request for an Interpol Red Notice for Senussi is a clear demonstration of their commitment to international police cooperation and justice," the agency's chief Ronald Noble said in a statement.

"Targeting and arresting those involved in embezzling funds and making them accountable for their actions before the courts will help Libya achieve its goal," said Noble.

The Libyan interim authorities' struggle to bring rival militias - who were instrumental in Gaddafi's overthrow - and tribes under control has raised doubt about their ability to assure fair trials for old regime figures.

But Tripoli has insisted Senussi would get proper justice there, while France, confirming it played a role in his arrest in Mauritania, wants to try him for the 1989 bombing of an airliner over Niger in which 54 French nationals died.

LIBYAN MISSION TO MAURITANIA

Libyan foreign ministry spokesman Saad Elshlmani said the ministry was in touch with its Mauritanian counterpart, adding that a delegation would head for Mauritania, possibly including the deputy prime minister.

Asked when the delegation would go, Elshlmani said: "Soon".

France, which led Western backing for the insurgency that toppled Gaddafi with the help of NATO air strikes, said it had cooperated with Mauritanian authorities on the apprehension of Senussi ahead of its extradition request.

A statement from President Nicolas Sarkozy's office noted Senussi had been sentenced in absentia for the UTA airliner attack, in which 170 people were killed. Families of the victims immediately demanded he face justice in France.

An ICC spokesman said on Saturday an ICC arrest warrant for Senussi remained valid and requested that it be implemented.

The ICC has charged Senussi and Gaddafi's son Saif al-Islam, captured in the southern Libyan desert in November, as being "indirect co-perpetrators" of murder and persecution of Libyans who rose up against the veteran dictator.

But the Libyan foreign ministry's Elshlmani said: "He's a Libyan ... I think they will give us the priority. He will face justice. It is very important that he is sent to Libya."

Mauritania has not signed the Rome Statute governing the ICC and authorities were not immediately available to comment on what they would do with Senussi.

"They are not obliged to give him to the ICC because they are not members, so they will probably agree on our request but we will wait and see," Elshlmani said.

Senussi is also suspected in his North African homeland of having played a central role in the killing of more than 1,200 inmates at Tripoli's Abu Salim prison in 1996.

It was the arrest of a lawyer for victims' relatives that sparked Libya's Arab Spring revolt in February last year.

A security source in Nouakchott who spoke on condition of anonymity said Senussi was "currently on the premises of the Directorate General of Territorial Security located in the centre of Nouakchott, in the government district".

Diplomatic sources said Senussi had several passports in his possession including a false Malian passport with which he was arrested. They said the passports were under several aliases and some pictures showed Senussi with a beard.

The Mauritanian government has made no comment beyond a report by its official news agency which said Senussi was arrested at Nouakchott airport on a regular flight from Casablanca, carrying doctored Malian travel documents.

"Senussi appears to have used a false passport to get into Morocco ... It's puzzling for us but after all this is the head of intelligence of the Gaddafi regime and they had tremendous resources," a Moroccan foreign ministry source said.

Britain, along with France one of the key Western backers of the insurgency, also cited the need for Mauritania to cooperate with the ICC in a statement by Foreign Secretary William Hague.
