BBC TeachingEnglish Article : 'Creative writing for language ...

BBC TeachingEnglish team has posted article an article ?Creative writing for language learners (and teachers)?.

BBC TeachingEnglish team says, ?Creative writing normally refers to the production of texts which have an aesthetic rather than a purely informative, instrumental or pragmatic purpose. Most often, such texts take the form of poems or stories, though they are not confined to these genres. (Letters, journal entries, blogs, essays, travelogues, etc. can also be more or less creative.) In fact, the line between creative writing (CW) and expository writing (ER) is not carved in stone. In general, however CW texts draw more heavily on intuition, close observation, imagination, and personal memories than ER texts.?

500500 Startups has had a bit of personnel shuffling, with the promotion of George Kellerman to partner, the addition of Pivotal Labs' Parker Thompson as a venture partner, and the unfortunate departure of Paul Singh, who's running off to do his own startup. The firm now has 22 employees stationed all around the globe, in Silicon Valley, NYC, China, India, and Latin America.

Spy who foiled jet bomb plot to be MI5 intelligence chief

By Peter Griffiths

LONDON (Reuters) - A British spy who thwarted an al Qaeda plot to blow up planes with explosives hidden in drinks bottles and led the response to the 2005 London bombings will be the new head of Britain's domestic intelligence agency, the government said on Thursday.

Andrew Parker has three decades' experience at the agency, known as MI5, countering Islamist militants, Irish republicans and organised criminals, and was deputy head since 2007.

The 50-year-old, a keen birdwatcher and wildlife photographer, will be in charge of 3,800 staff investigating threats ranging from bomb plots and the spread of weapons of mass destruction to espionage and cyber attacks.

One of his first tasks will be to protect U.S. President Barack Obama, British Prime Minister David Cameron and other world leaders at the Group of Eight summit in Northern Ireland in June.

The last time Britain hosted the annual G8 meeting in 2005, four suicide bombers killed 52 commuters in London in co-ordinated attacks. Parker was in charge of the agency's reaction to the bombings and oversaw a significant expansion of its role.

Parker, who led the MI5 team that disrupted a 2006 conspiracy to attack multiple passenger jets with bombs hidden in drinks bottles, said it was a "great honour" to be made head of the agency, also known as the Security Service.

"I look forward to leading the Service through its next chapter," he said in a statement.

The bespectacled father-of-two will replace the current head, Jonathan Evans, when he steps down in April after six years in the job during which Britain suffered no significant attacks.

SECRECY

In contrast to the secrecy that defined its work for decades, MI5 published Parker's name and picture on its website. The government did not acknowledge the agency's existence until 1989 and its head remained anonymous until 20 years ago.

Based in an imposing white stone building near parliament on the River Thames, MI5's role is to fight "espionage, terrorism and sabotage, from the activities of agents of foreign powers, and from actions intended to overthrow or undermine parliamentary democracy".

Parker takes over at a time of pressure on public spending, a persistent threat from al Qaeda and worries about a small group of Irish nationalists who refuse to accept a 1998 peace deal in Northern Ireland.

Outgoing MI5 chief Evans warned last year that al Qaeda militants were using the countries which toppled their leaders in the Arab Spring protests as bases to train radical Western youths for potential attacks on Britain.

Prime Minister Cameron said in January that Britain and other western countries face a "large and existential threat" from Islamist militants that could last for decades.

This is the Modem World: Nerds in rabbit holes

Each week Joshua Fruhlinger contributes This is the Modem World, a column dedicated to exploring the culture of consumer technology.

DNP This is the Modem World Nerds in Rabbit Holes

I have many interests: mountain biking, martial arts, video games, running, reading, cooking and horror movies. For each one of these, there is an internet rabbit hole so deep, so full of information and compatriots that it's a miracle I ever actually follow through on them. Ask yourself this: Do you do what you say you do online?

The internet is great at allowing people to nerd out on their particular interests. While it serves up news and media like a champ, many of us spend our time deep-diving into whatever rabbit hole interests us. When we nerd out about technology here at Engadget, for instance, we're getting a double dose: reading about technology in a tech environment. It's a beautiful thing; it's addictive and we lose sight of reality while we're going deep. We could be in a bar, at home, at the office -- wherever it is, we lose sense of our environment.

In jailhouse interview, Sandusky says witness misinterpreted shower

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) ? Jerry Sandusky said in interview excerpts broadcast Monday that a key witness against him misinterpreted him showering with a young boy in Penn State football team facilities more than a decade ago.

Sandusky told documentary filmmaker John Ziegler, in recordings played on NBC's "Today" show, that he does not understand how Mike McQueary concluded "that sex was going on" when he witnessed Sandusky showering with a boy in 2001.

"That would have been the last thing I would have thought about," Sandusky said during what Ziegler described as 3? hours of interviews. "I would have thought maybe fooling around or something like that."

McQueary, a graduate assistant in 2001, testified at trial that he heard "skin-on-skin smacking sound" and had no doubt he was witnessing anal sex.

In a transcript posted online, Ziegler said he asked Sandusky whether McQueary was wrong when he said they made eye contact during that incident.

"I don't know that he's lying," Sandusky replied. "I think that he would be uncertain about it and he may have said that I thought that I saw him. But he wouldn't have known that. How could he have known that?"

McQueary's father, John McQueary, declined comment, and there was no answer at McQueary's lawyer's office early Monday. Mike McQueary has filed a defamation and whistleblower lawsuit against Penn State over how he was treated after Sandusky's arrest.

The boy, identified as Victim 2 in court records, was not a witness at trial. A team of civil lawyers has said they are representing Victim 2 and posted online audio recordings of voicemails purportedly from Sandusky and left for the boy.

Sandusky also told Ziegler he was not sure whether head coach Joe Paterno, who was fired after Sandusky's November 2011 arrest, would have let him keep coaching if he suspected Sandusky was a pedophile. Sandusky was investigated by university police for a separate shower incident in 1998, but remained one of Paterno's top assistants through 1999.

"If he absolutely thought I was, I'd say no," Sandusky said. "If he had a suspicion, I don't know the answer to that."

When Ziegler asked Sandusky whether he would admit touching some of the boys inappropriately, Sandusky responded that he didn't do it, according to the transcript posted on www.framingpaterno.com .

"Yeah, I hugged them," Sandusky said, according to Ziegler. "Maybe I tested boundaries. Maybe I shouldn't have showered with them. Yeah, I tickled them. I looked at them as being probably younger than even some of them were. But I didn't do any of these horrible acts and abuse these young people. I didn't violate them. I didn't harm them."

Ziegler, who is working on a defense of Paterno, said the interviews were conducted during three sessions, and told the AP on Monday that additional excerpts will be posted online over the coming days. He also has exchanged correspondence with Sandusky that he does not intend to release.

Wick Sollers, a Paterno family lawyer, said in a statement released Sunday that Sandusky had an opportunity to testify at trial but "chose not to do so."

Penn State issued a statement that said Sandusky's latest remarks "continue to open wounds for his victims, and the victims of child sexual abuse everywhere."

Sandusky, 69, is serving a 30- to 60-year prison sentence after being convicted last year of 45 counts of child sexual abuse. He maintains his innocence and is pursuing appeals.

Closest star system found in a century

Mar. 11, 2013 ? A pair of newly discovered stars is the third-closest star system to the Sun, according to a paper that will be published in Astrophysical Journal Letters. The duo is the closest star system discovered since 1916. The discovery was made by Kevin Luhman, an associate professor of astronomy and astrophysics at Penn State University and a researcher in Penn State's Center for Exoplanets and Habitable Worlds.

Both stars in the new binary system are "brown dwarfs," which are stars that are too small in mass to ever become hot enough to ignite hydrogen fusion. As a result, they are very cool and dim, resembling a giant planet like Jupiter more than a bright star like the Sun.

"The distance to this brown dwarf pair is 6.5 light years -- so close that Earth's television transmissions from 2006 are now arriving there," Luhman said. "It will be an excellent hunting ground for planets because it is very close to Earth, which makes it a lot easier to see any planets orbiting either of the brown dwarfs." Since it is the third-closest star system, in the distant future it might be one of the first destinations for manned expeditions outside our solar system, Luhman said.

The star system is named "WISE J104915.57-531906" because it was discovered in a map of the entire sky obtained by the NASA-funded Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) satellite. It is only slightly farther away than the second-closest star, Barnard's star, which was discovered 6.0 light years from the Sun in 1916. The closest star system consists of Alpha Centauri, found to be a neighbor of the Sun in 1839 at 4.4 light years, and the fainter Proxima Centauri, discovered in 1917 at 4.2 light years.

Edward (Ned) Wright, the principal investigator for the WISE satellite, said "One major goal when proposing WISE was to find the closest stars to the Sun. WISE 1049-5319 is by far the closest star found to date using the WISE data, and the close-up views of this binary system we can get with big telescopes like Gemini and the future James Webb Space Telescope will tell us a lot about the low mass stars known as brown dwarfs." Wright is the David Saxon Presidential Chair in Physics and a professor of physics and astronomy at UCLA.

Astronomers have long speculated about the possible presence of a distant, dim object orbiting the Sun, which is sometimes called Nemesis. However, Luhman has concluded, "we can rule out that the new brown dwarf system is such an object because it is moving across the sky much too fast to be in orbit around the Sun."

To discover the new star system, Luhman studied the images of the sky that the WISE satellite had obtained during a 13-month period ending in 2011. During its mission, WISE observed each point in the sky 2 to 3 times. "In these time-lapse images, I was able to tell that this system was moving very quickly across the sky -- which was a big clue that it was probably very close to our solar system," Luhman said.

After noticing its rapid motion in the WISE images, Luhman went hunting for detections of the suspected nearby star in older sky surveys. He found that it indeed was detected in images spanning from 1978 to 1999 from the Digitized Sky Survey, the Two Micron All-Sky Survey, and the Deep Near Infrared Survey of the Southern Sky. "Based on how this star system was moving in the images from the WISE survey, I was able to extrapolate back in time to predict where it should have been located in the older surveys and, sure enough, it was there," Luhman said.

By combining the detections of the star system from the various surveys, Luhman was able to measure its distance via parallax, which is the apparent shift of a star in the sky due to Earth's orbit around the Sun. He then used the Gemini South telescope on Cerro Pach?n in Chile to obtain a spectrum of it, which demonstrated that it had a very cool temperature, and hence was a brown dwarf. "As an unexpected bonus, the sharp images from Gemini also revealed that the object actually was not just one but a pair of brown dwarfs orbiting each other," Luhman said.

"It was a lot of detective work," Luhman said. "There are billions of infrared points of light across the sky, and the mystery is which one -- if any of them -- could be a star that is very close to our solar system."

Concierge by CoolHandle Will Save Your Business from Losing ...

written by John Chow on March 12, 2013

Over the years I have heard too many people complain about poor quality from vendors. We will outsource almost anything to save us money, time and energy. However, is our business suffering because of the poor quality? Are we actually losing the ability to make MORE money because we aren?t taking our business to the right place? These are the questions that I have been thinking about lately, which led me on a search to find the ultimate outsourcing location.

Just think about, if we use poor grammar on our landing page how many potential customers do you think we would have lost? 1, 5, 100, 500? Imagine if the error was more than poor grammar, like poor graphic quality, a spotty video, etc. All of this could have a negative effect on your business. Also, who here actually enjoys talking to 5 different vendors for one project/promotion? I know that for me it is a huge hassle to arrange all the various projects I?m working on. It?s almost another job in and of itself. I have to schedule calls in the middle of the night to meet their timezone, I have emails flooding in during dinner and honestly I?m just tired of having my outsourcing become another ball and chain that I tried to break free of like a 9 to 5 job. Isn?t that why we are all Internet entrepreneurs in the first place? So we are not shackled to anyone but our own free will?

Here enters Concierge by CoolHandle. I?m sure you have read a few articles about them already since they seem to be blowing up in various blogs and online hotspots. They offer everything we need to get our projects done on time, in one location with amazing quality. They literally offer all the services we need under one roof ? ranging from legal services, copywriting, graphic design, video production, tuned hosting, marketing materials and much more. When I was talking to friends in the business about these services they were skeptical about the price, but honestly we are paying for what we get. If I spent $500 on a video, we all know that video will be poor quality, horrible actors, terrible location and in turn will lose potential profits. By not paying a little extra to make a kickass video, I sabotage myself from gaining the highest number of customers I possibly can!

Howard Newton once said, ?People forget how fast you did a job ? but they remember how well you did it.?

coolhandle-turbo-serverFor those of you who haven?t heard of CoolHandle, they are at heart a web hosting company. Ryan Morris, the Marketing Director at CoolHandle had this to say about their integration of Concierge into their web hosting company, ?CoolHandle has been in business since 2001 and with over a decade of experience working with Affiliates and Internet marketers we saw a need for a single source for all of their service and marketing needs. Over the years, we had the pleasure of offering services to our Affiliates and Internet marketing partners. We found that they were using, at times, over a dozen different vendors for services. Our partners would have constant issues with the vendors trying to coordinate and manage each of them. We saw a need in the market to offer a complete suite of services and thus Concierge by CoolHandle was born.?

CINCINNATI (AP) - The University of Cincinnati says it won't interfere with an outdoor display of female genitalia photos on campus.

The college's LGBTQ Alliance and UC Feminists say the 12 photos of vaginas are meant to cause discussion aimed at discrimination and exploitation of women's bodies. The project called Re-envisioning the Female Body also wants to counter an anti-abortion demonstration on campus last year.

Critics of the temporary display planned Thursday and Friday have complained that is pandering obscenity and could be viewed by young children.

University President Santa Ono (OH'-noh) says in a statement that UC is an academic community where ideas and images are analyzed and debated, however controversial and complex they might be. He also says the school is a public institution obligated to protect the First Amendment.

Time Warner spinning off Time Inc. magazines

Time Warner Inc. plans to spin out its division that publishes titles like Time, Fortune and People into a separate company, ending weeks of merger negotiations with Meredith Corp.

Time Warner said on Wednesday that the process to separate Time Inc into an independent public company will likely take place by the end of the year.

In a separate statement, Meredith said it had been in talks to combine Time Inc's titles that focus on lifestyle and entertainment including People and InStyle with Meredith's titles such as Everyday Living with Rachael Ray and Better Homes and Gardens into a new publicly traded company.

"We respect Time Warner's decision and certainly remain open to continuing a dialogue on how our companies might work together on future opportunities," Meredith Corp CEO Stephen Lacy said in a statement.

Morningstar analyst Michael Corty did not rule out a future deal between the two companies. "Clearly, Time Warner did not get the right price from Meredith. I don't think this 100 percent eliminates some kind of combination with Meredith in the future," he said.

Magazines have been hit with unprecedented challenges in recent years as people turn to smart phones and tablets to read and advertisers look to other media to place dollars beside print. Investors have been pushing Time Warner Chief Executive Jeff Bewkes for years to hive off Time Inc., which is considered a slow growth, mature asset.

In 2012, revenue at Time Inc. dropped 7 percent to $3.4 billion on declines in advertising and subscription sales. Operating income fell 25 percent in the same period.

"A complete spin-off of Time Inc provides strategic clarity for Time Warner Inc enabling us to focus entirely on our television networks and film and TV production businesses, and improves our growth profile," Bewkes said in a statement.

As the head of Time Warner, Bewkes has been actively sliming down the company to just cable networks and its movie studio. He spun off AOL and Time Warner Cable, both of which now trade as independent, stand-alone companies.

Spinning out publishing assets has been a popular choice among media conglomerates. News Corp. plans to separate its newspaper and book publishing assets that include The Wall Street Journal and HarperCollins from its entertainment divisions like 20th Century Fox and the Fox News Cable network.

The rationale underlying these separations is to divide high-growth assets such as cable networks from slow-growth or in some cases declining assets like newspapers and magazines.

Analysts said these moves create two companies each attractive to different types of investors. Growth investors are attracted, naturally, to the high-growth businesses, while value investors are attracted to the cash flow generation of the slower growth assets.

Nasdaq, SharesPost to set up exchange for unlisted stock

(Reuters) - Nasdaq OMX Group Inc said it will form a marketplace for trading in shares in unlisted companies in a joint venture with SharesPost Inc, whose private trading platform has run into regulatory trouble.

The stock exchange operator will own a majority of the venture, Nasdaq Private Market. Specific terms were not disclosed.

The new market, to be based in San Francisco, will launch later this year, pending regulatory approvals, and will be led by SharesPost founder Greg Brogger.

SharesPost's online trading platform, which matched buyers and sellers of unlisted shares, was charged by the Securities and Exchange Commission last March for failing to register as a broker-dealer before offering securities.

SharesPost's broker dealer and investment advisory business will continue to operate separately from the joint venture, the companies said in a statement.

SharesPost began in 2009 and its fortunes rose in step with technology startups such as Facebook Inc and LinkedIn , which traded on the market before they went public.

Recent legislation, the Jumpstart Our Business Startups Act, has boosted opportunities for trading of unlisted companies. Under the act, an unlisted company can have 2,000 shareholders, up from 500.

The Audi A6 Hybrid is powered by a combination of a 211 hp/350 Nm?2.0 TFSI and a 54 hp/211 Nm electric motor that?s fed by a?1.3 kWh lithium-ion battery. A total output of 245 hp and 480 Nm of torque can be had briefly in boost mode. Power goes to the front wheels.

In EV mode (activated by pushing a button on the centre console), the Audi A6 Hybrid can travel 3.0 km (for a constant 60?km/h). Exceed 100 km/h in this mode and the petrol engine kicks in.

0-100 km/h is accomplished in 7.5 seconds and top speed is 240 km/h. Average fuel consumption is quoted at 6.2 litres per 100 km and CO2 emissions at 145 grams per km, both of these being combined figures. A 30% aluminium body construction translates to a sub-1.85 tonne kerb weight.

The electric motor sits behind the TFSI, where you?d expect?the eight-speed tiptronic?s torque converter to be.?Indicators on the 7-inch Driver Information System in the instrument panel and on the MMI monitor display information such as energy flow in the hybrid system or the breakdown of energy consumption.

How do you tell it apart from the regular A6 sedan? Hybrid badges aside, 18-inch 10-arm turbine design wheels covered in 245/45 rubber and an Arctic Silver body colour (in addition to the existing A6 colours) are Hybrid-exclusive items.

Inside there are aluminium trigon inlays in place of the regular A6?s wood trim, and?a power meter (showing percentage of power used) replaces the rev counter. The four-spoke steering wheel and gear knob are covered in leather, while the seats are trimmed in Milano leather.

Regenerative braking is the order of the day. Energy recuperation while coasting is possible up to 120 km/h; braking recuperation is active at all speeds. Brake hard and the conventional hydraulic system joins in to provide more stopping power.

The air-con compressor is electrically driven, so even when the engine is off (in start-stop phases), air-con cooling performance is unaffected. It?s an automatic quad-zone system, in case you?re wondering.

The use of a lithium-ion battery, Audi says, cuts weight?by 40% compared to nickel?metal hydride batteries. The 38 kg?battery is air-cooled by a blower from the interior or by an internal refrigerant circuit coupled to the automatic air-con.

Maintaining the battery within the appropriate temperature range prolongs its lifespan and ensures the vehicle can operate in EV mode for as long as possible to increase efficiency.

Due to the battery?s location under the boot floor, boot volume is down to 375 litres from 530 on the regular A6 sedan, but one can always fold the back seat down for more space.

In terms of toys, the Audi A6 Hybrid gets MMI navigation plus with MMI touch and an 8-inch TFT display. There?s also a Black Panel touch pad, which displays radio station buttons and even allows drivers to enter letters and numbers using their finger tips.
